Art Night 2017 x Whitechapel Gallery, St. George-In-Th-East-Church
Overtone
Overtone is an immersive and sensory sound art installation consisting 8 new pieces with elements of scent presented at St George-in-the-East Church by artist Meng Zhou and curator Yusi Xiong.
Built in 1729, the Grade-I listed Anglican church, which was partially destroyed by a bomb during the WWII Blitz in 1941 still has active engagements with the local community. Zhou's works focus on the overtones- sounds that you can only hear when you concentrate, specifically responding to the cultures and histories of the site and the local area.
Audience are invited to pick a scent to keep with them before starting to discover and encounter the installation, and contact a phone number after finishing their visit. The installation can also be seen as a discussion of how histories and memories, presentness, and the future of an area can be archived and re-used, kept and interpreted, predicted and received through an alternative way.
